The Middle East has an unflattering media profile so it may be something of a
surprise to discover that Jordan is a favorite destination for those in the
know who harbor a love of wild places, history and romance.
Euan and
Dig
shall lead a group
of no more than 14 on a journey of adventure and
discovery. We will explore the fabulous canyons of Petra, from whose sheer walls the ancient Nabateans
carved their city, with its amazing temples (it's no
wonder Harrison Ford came here to film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) and
explore the cobbled streets, theatre and circus of Jerash, which remains one of
the World's best preserved Roman cities.
We will discover Karak and walk the walls of its great
Crusader castle and
yet still we will not have reached our main objective - Wadi Rum. First visited
by a climbing expedition as recently as 1984, Wadi Rum is the ultimate
adventurer's destination. We will travel by foot, camel and jeep to discover why
it was Lawrence described Rum as the most fabulous place in all Arabia. Rum is a
wilderness of giant rock peaks that rise in great walls to tower above the
desert sands that are home to the Bedouin - among the most hospitable people in
the World. One of the highlights of our Rum expedition will be the hike to
the summit of Jebel Um Adaami - 1,830 meters - the highest in Jordan, with
amazing views of distant Saudi Arabia.
Following our Rum
safari we move to Aqaba, where there will be the chance
to relax for a couple of days. This part of the Red Sea is one of the World's
best sites for diving and snorkeling.
Your trip leaders
are Dig and Euan Bulmer and, in Wadi Rum, Saleem Almoktar, a Bedouin whose home is
the mountains and deserts of Rum.
In September
2004, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales visited Wadi Rum and chose Saleem's
family as his guides for his desert adventure.
Transport will be by our
comfortable minibus and jeep, with
assistance from camels while on safari.
