"In
short, I had a most excellent time in Provence and Dig played a
huge part in that. I
would
definitely sign up with Hiking World again...Dig
was helpful, cheerful, client focused, and
thoughtful in all ways throughout the trip
from leaving cards and lavender soaps and
sachets on our nightstands the first night,
to walking us right into the train station on the
last day and making sure we were set, rather than
just dropping us off outside"
“The
Empire of the Sun” and beloved of the gods: so said Frederic
Mistral of Provence. The
beauty of the region is incontestable, its ways steeped in
history.
This
is a land of olive trees, vineyards, ancient villages and hills
that have enchanted such artists as Cezanne and Mattise.
We invite you to join us on a journey of gentle
exploration through our favorite two corners of Provence –
the Luberon and the Cote d’Azur.
In
the Luberon we shall meander through olive groves, explore
enchanting hill top villages and, we suspect, you will be
captivated by a country whose contented soul in this idyllic
landscape has changed little since the Romans called this home.
If we tell you that the food and wine are rather pleasant
you can be sure it is an understatement. Vines cover the slopes
of every favorable area – Cotes du Rhone, du Ventoux,
and des Baux.
Provence is
also an orchard – cherries, plums, apricots and peaches and in
spring the whole region is a bouquet of flowers.
The
second chapter of our journey is based on the
Cote d’Azur - the Mediterranean coast of Provence.
It is a coastline rich in color where early Victorians
first discovered its secrets and made it a playground of the
rich and famous. Today
the stars are still to be found in St Tropez
enjoying the splendor of its elegant boutiques and gourmet
restaurants.
Not
far away is the charming little hamlet of Aiguebelle that
nestles under steep, wooded hillsides that sweep down to golden
sands and glorious turquoise waters that are crystal clear. Enchanting paths allow the hiker to discover secret coves and
picnic places from where there are captivating views of Les Iles
d’Or.
Our
holiday both starts and finishes on the banks of the Rhone at
Avignon – the city of Popes where history meets the eye at
every corner. Avignon
is big enough to be exciting and yet small enough to be quite
charming.
